My Favorite Photos of 2024

I took this photo from a spot called Hurricane Point during my last (photo) trip of the year to Monterey and the Big Sur area in California in late October, getting another point of view on the Bixby Bridge from about a mile away (75mm, 1/400sec, f/13, ISO 200)

We seem to be traveling less these past few years than we have in the past. But I still find the energy and time to experience and photograph things that interest me. Some of those images are discussed at varying lengths in other posts found in this blog and the photos are also uploaded to both my photography website and to my albums on Flickr.

Okay, before getting too far into this post, here’s my usual caveat about favorites: as the title of the post says, these images are my favorites of the year, not necessarily favorites of yours or anyone else (although, of course, I do hope you enjoy them). As usual, your mileage may vary.

Monterey & Big Sur Area

This was the last such trip for us this year, and in addition to the image at the top of the post providing more of a location-surrounding view of the Bixby Bridge, I have two other favorites from the adventure. One is a panoramic view of a section of the coast taken while we were further south into Big Sur.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point (60mm, 1/250sec, f/13, ISO 200 – 8 images merged)

The other is a shot of the McWay Waterfall that, quite honestly, was my reason for choosing to travel down to Big Sur this year. I had to work a bit harder to get this image as you may know if you’ve read an earlier post in this blog describing the trip.

Lake Tahoe

It was only a few weeks earlier than our Monterey / Big Sur trip, that we had managed to spent a week at Lake Tahoe (we’d not traveled much at all during the first three quarters of the year so I was trying hard to make up for lost time). I got all three of my favorites during our Lake Tahoe trip this year from the same early morning hike on the Cave Rock Trail.

Sunrise over southern Lake Tahoe (24mm, 1/60 sec, f/11, ISO 4000)
‘Wall-like’ rock formation on the plateau near Cave Rock (24mm, 1/250 sec, f/6.3, ISO 2000)
Sunrise lighting up the California mountains across the lake (32mm, 1/320 sec, f/6.3, ISO 200)

San Francisco

This was not a trip for the two of us but a sponsored, early morning photo walk at a shorebird habitat in Heron’s Head Park in San Francisco. For me, it was also something a bit different in that I was deliberately looking for wildlife to photograph (not something I’ve normally pursued).

Because we started very early, all of us on the walk had the opportunity to also grab a sunrise over the bay, before starting the search for bird photos.

Sunrise over San Francisco Bay is predominately a landscape image which includes a couple of silhouetted birds – [240mm, 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400]

These two were my favorite bird images. The first while the Great Blue Heron politely posed for photos and the second when he tired of posing.

Great Blue Heron (posing?) – [300mm, 1/1000 sec, f/7.1, ISO 1600]
Great Blue Heron in flight (definitely done posing!) – [300mm, 1/1000 sec, f/7.1, ISO 5000]

Maui

The only other travel we did this year (a couple of weeks during the first three-quarters of the year) was our (usually) annual trip to the Hawaiian Island of Maui. And, once there we took it very easy, only leaving the property for groceries or an occasional dinner meal elsewhere. As a direct result, the only photos I took were on the property. The first of my Maui favorites are these two of some of the flowers growing at the resort.

Plumeria (tree) flowers at NKBR (105mm, 1/1000 sec, f/6.3, ISO 1250)
Phalaenopsis orchid at NKBR (105mm, 1/800 sec, f/10, ISO 3200)

My other favorite was captured on our last night, while having dinner at the Sea House Restaurant (on the property) when I noticed a wonderful sunset developing outside. The only camera I had handy was my phone, so I excused myself for a moment, stepped outside, and captured this image.

Thank you for taking a look at my favorites of 2024. If you would like to see these images somewhat larger and with greater photographic detail and color fidelity, just click on this link to my photo website and the What’s New section or use this Flickr link to my 2024 Album. There you will find all of the above favorites along with others taken in the same locations at around the same time. Here’s wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a terrific 2025.

If you enjoy reading these occasional posts (generally no more than five or six a year) you might consider subscribing. To do so, is easy. You may have noticed while reading a post, that anytime you scroll up a little dialog bar will show up in the bottom, right-hand, corner of wherever you are in the post. And that dialog bar will include the word “Subscribe” (without the quote-marks). [It also includes two other words (“Comment” and “Reblog” plus a “…” option)]. If you click on the “Subscribe” word, another dialog will appear, just asking for your email address. Once you complete that process, you will likely receive another communication asking you to confirm your subscription.
